# The Twitch Extension for Chat Translation

A Twitch Extension is something you switch on for your channel — not something anyone installs in their browser. Ours puts your translated chat, your bot’s settings and your viewers’ languages right inside Twitch. Most chat bots don’t have one.

## Looking for a browser extension?

This is a Twitch Extension: you, the streamer, add it to your channel. If you are a viewer who wants to read chat in your own language, a browser extension does that for you alone. If you are the streamer and want everyone in chat to understand each other, you need a bot.

The translation itself needs neither. The bot reads and posts in your chat from our servers, so translations appear for everyone whether or not the extension is switched on. The extension is where you watch and steer it.

## Your important messages in one place

Chat moves fast. The live view pulls the messages that matter into one feed beside your stream: every translated message with the original underneath it, and your moderators and VIPs highlighted down the other side.

- A language badge on every message, so you can see at a glance where your chat is coming from.
- MOD and VIP switches to filter those two apart from the rest when it gets busy.
- A TROLL switch with a countdown (paid plans) — start troll mode, watch the time left, stop it, without typing in your own chat.
- A built-in command reference, one click away, for when you forget the exact wording mid-stream.

## Change how the bot speaks — without leaving Twitch

The settings that matter mid-stream are right there in the extension’s config panel, so you are not alt-tabbing to a browser tab between games.

- Pick the language your chat gets translated into.
- Choose whether the bot replies in a thread under the original message or posts a plain one.
- Shape the message itself — start from a preset or write your own format, with a preview of the result as you type.
- Send a test message to your own chat to see exactly how it will look.
- Check your plan and how many translations you have used this period.

## Show your chat how international it is

Viewers get a panel with the languages your chat actually speaks: how many messages have been translated, how many languages turned up, and which one leads — with flags and a live bar chart.

It is a quiet piece of proof. A viewer typing in Portuguese can see they are not the only one, and a first-time visitor can see the room is bigger than it looks.

## Switching it on takes about two minutes

### Add it on Twitch

Find Universal Translator in the Twitch extension library — or follow the button on this page — and activate it on your channel.

### It finds your channel

No tokens, no keys, nothing to copy across. It recognises the channel it is installed on and connects to your account by itself.

### Not connected yet?

If you have not set the bot up, the extension’s settings panel says so and links you to the setup page, then notices when you are done and switches itself over.

You do not have to be live. Every view works while the channel is offline, which is when most people set things up anyway.

## Browser extension or bot: which do I need?

It depends on who needs the translation.

- If you are a viewer and want to read chat in your own language, use a browser extension that translates Twitch chat on your screen. The streamer does not have to set anything up, and only you see the translations.
- If you are the streamer and want everyone in chat to understand each other, you need a bot. It posts translations into the chat itself, so you, your mods and every viewer can read them.

## What can Universal Translator not do?

- It translates chat, not your voice: there are no subtitles or captions of your stream audio.
- It works on Twitch only for now.
- Replying with !translate needs a paid plan. Incoming chat is translated on every plan, including the free one.

If you need subtitles of your voice, StreamTranslate does that and runs alongside the bot: https://streamtranslate.live/?utm_source=universal-translator.io&utm_medium=referral
