# StreamTranslate Translates What You Say. We Translate What Chat Says.

Subtitles carry your voice to viewers who speak other languages. When they start typing back, a chat bot carries their words to you, your mods and the rest of chat — and lets you answer in their language.

## How do I translate my Twitch chat automatically?

Add a translation bot to your channel. It takes about two minutes, and neither you nor your viewers install anything:

1. Sign in with your Twitch account at https://www.universal-translator.io/en/for/twitch-translation-for-streamtranslate and authorize Universal Translator.
2. Open Settings and add your Twitch channel.
3. Choose the language you want chat translated into, usually the one you stream in.
4. Go live. Messages in other languages are translated in chat within a few seconds.

## “Do I Still Need a Chat Bot?”

StreamTranslate's own chat page says that with it, “the cost of running a separate chat bot, paying for a translation API, and managing the !translate command goes away”. Its chat translation is an opt-in overlay: “Viewers who want translation enable it on their end; others see chat as-is.”

For a stream where you do most of the talking and chat is quiet, that is a fair point — you may not need us. For a chat-heavy stream it leaves three gaps:

- Viewers who never switched it on still see a Spanish message they can't read, so they can't join in.
- Your mods need to understand every message, not just the ones they opted into.
- Replying is still on you. Understanding a viewer doesn't let you answer them in their language.

## Browser extension or bot: which do I need?

- If you are a viewer and want to read chat in your own language, use a browser extension that translates Twitch chat on your screen. Only you see the translations, and the streamer does not have to set anything up.
- If you are the streamer and want everyone in chat to understand each other, you need a bot. It posts translations into the chat itself, so you, your mods and every viewer can read them.

## What can Universal Translator not do?

- It translates chat, not your voice: there are no subtitles or captions of your stream audio.
- It works on Twitch only for now.
